The Most Influential Lesbians In Norway

Gaysir.no lately published their annual list of the most influential lesbians and gays in Norway. It's not about popularity or who’s hotter, but about the recognition of the women who help normalize the picture of gays and lesbians in Norway, who work for gay rights and are role models for young gay people.

The editorial staff who have chosen the candidates, both for gays and lesbians, publish this list each year. Gaysir.no is a gay and lesbian network site with news and a forum-section. Make sure you check it out, if you speak a little Norwegian.

Since we can’t, Absent from the Gro Hammerseng Fan-Forum was so nice to translate it. Many thanks for the tip and translation!

Here you go with the most influential lesbians of Norway!

[Copyright @ Gaysir.no]

The first place goes to the only out lesbian politician in Parliament.
The candidates have been judged on the same criteria as the list of the most influential gay men of 2009.

The will, capability and courage to further gay rights and the general acceptance of gay love was essential when selecting candidates. Being in a position of some power is not enough. The candidates must also have used their role to influence the lives of gays and lesbians in a positive way.
This year, our choice for 1st place is Anette Trettebergstuen. She is unafraid and non-compromittal in matters of gay rights, domestic and abroad.

Those who have fallen out of the list from last year is Anne Aasheim, Anne Holt and Linda Eide.

1. Anette Trettebergstuen (27)
The gaypolitical spokesperson for the Labour Party. Still the only out lesbian in the Norwegian Parliament. Anette has used her position in the Forreign Affairs Comittee to consciously put international LGBT-rights in the spotlight. She is unafraid and non-compromittal when gay rights are on the agenda.

She has involved herself in numerous human rights affairs, including the work to remove the travel restrictions for HIV-positive people, and to remove § 155, the so-called HIV-paragragh. Together with Håkon Haugli, Anette has also put a lot of focus on the health of young gay people. Up one place from last year.

2. Sara Azmeh Rasmussen (35)
Writer and pundit with muslim background. The only publicly out lesbian muslim in Norway. Sara has shown through words and actions that she is willing to go very far in her fight against suppression of muslim women and homosexuals. During the Gay Days of 2008, she wanted to symbolize her stands by burning a niqab.

Sara challenges traditional attitudes in the muslim society by being provocotive and by using reasonable arguments to confront them. She has been very clear with the `Norwegian Islamic Council', in that their view of homosexuality and their refusal to take a stand against death penalty for homosexuality is totalitarian and unacceptable.

After a period of confusion, Sara defines herself as transgender. New on the list.

3. Vibeke Skofterud (28)
The cross country skiing star came out as a lesbian in a blissful relationship in 2008. After having argued with herself, Vibeke chose to go public with her sexuality, and her new girlfriend. "I could live in a dump site, as long as I can be with Line", Vibeke has stated. She is a good role model for young gay athletes.

A couple of years ago, she was voted the 3rd sexiest girl in Norway by the magazine 'Mann'. New on the list.

4. Gro Hammerseng (28)
She is still one of the iconic figures in Norwegian women's handball, and her and Katja Nyberg's openness inspired Are Grongstad to come out as the first male gay handball player.

Afterellen.com placed Gro among the 100 hottest women in the world in 2008. The site also named Gro and Katja their international lesbian couple in their visibility awards. She was also awarded the Caspar-award from her home town. She is still the most beautiful lesbian from Toten, no Gjøvik. Same place as last year.

5. Bera Moseng (49)

The researcher and councilor for the Health Board, who together with photographer and author Lill-Ann Chepstow-Lusty, and the leader of the Health Board, Rolf Angeltvedt, published the book Gay Kids - "cool kids who also exist" in 2008.

Bera has extensive knowledge on what social issues that influence the living standards and health of gay people, and she happily shares this knowledge. Same place as last year.

6. Christine Koht (41)

Known from TV, radio and the stage light, in addition to being a writer. Christine happily gives of herself and shares her private life. In her Friday-column in the A-magazine, her relationship with author Pernille Rygg is made very clear.

Maybe the lesbian who is best at normalizing gay love. Down three places from last year.

7. Beate Gangås (45)
The Equality and Discrimination Ombudswoman since January 2006. Back in full force after a period of illness. A pitbull in the equality and diversity work within sports. Amongst other things, that involes a zero tolerance for sexual harassment and consequences for those who make homophobic remarks.

Has also stated that Norwegian employers need to become better at including gays and lesbians. Down one place from last year.

8. Erna Bøyum (46)
The editor of the Blikk magazine knows how to use her editorials  to put the spotlight on important issues. The editorials would have deserved a bigger audience than the subscribers of Blikk. Down one place from last year.

9. Karen-Christine (Kim) Friele (73)
For all forseeable future, Kim will be mentioned as the woman who has done the most for gay rights. She has played a part since way back in the 60's, and up until today. Kim might not be on top of the barricades anymore, but when Kim speaks, people listen.

In 2008, she was named an honorary member of the Labour Party. Same place as last year.

10. Karen Pinholt (33)
The new leader of LLH (Norwegian Association of Lesbian and Gay Liberation), has stated that the new main goal for LLh is making LGBT-issues obligatory in all stages of the education system. She also wants to push employers in a more 'gay-friendly' direction. On the list because we have great expectations to what she can accomplish as the leader of LLH. New on the list.

[End]

Yes, another ten reasons to move to Norway. Eleven actually, since gaysir.no is one itself. Oh wait, there's also Heidi Marie Vestrheim and the legalization of same-sex-marriage. And...well, just read the protrait of Norway and get your bags already!

Who are the most influential lesbians in your country? Let us know in the comments!

I fear we would already be in trouble should we make a list at all. How many out and publicly known lesbians do you have anyway, Norway? Can't you send us some? Or the recipe, which makes them different?
If I dig really deep into memory, I might come up with some names, but never 10, not even when putting "my countries" into one list. Cause we're not looking for celebrity lesbians, but for lesbians who make a difference and use their power for lesbians.

Would an honory lesbian count? Are you aware that current discussions and even legislations around the subject "equal rights for homosexuals" go back to a report by a certain German MEP issued in 1994?

Curious what names you'll come up with. And if we cannot beat Norway, we could perhaps create our own list "Most influential lesbians in Europe"?

... I have my day of inappropriate behaviour but I have to say that. You are so sweet :)

Whenever someone replied directly to your post, you can't edit it anymore. The comment-options were installed that way. Because you could just change your post and the one replying to you would look quite stupid if her reply doesn't make sense anymore. Or you could deny that you, for instance, insulted someone with editing your post afterwards.

But hey, this way we were able to chat for the first time ;) Thanks for the list and *sigh ...would anyone please at least try to beat Norway in anything. Now I know that the category Most.Out.Lesbians.Ever is already lost for the rest of Europe, but something else maybe? How are you in math? :p

Hmmm, seems like we're simply unbeatable... ;) But you know what they say:

If you can't beat them, join them!

So lesbians of Europe: WELCOME Cool

And pretty much every European nation beats us when it comes to science (math, physics, chemistry) knowledge/level in school.

But all in al it quite ok to be gay here. For me at leastLaughing

BTW; totally get the edit-catch. I didn't of think of "editing into the point of meaningless(ness)" Just made up that word Surprised

Well, does anyone have any actual numbers on this for the European countries?

Yes, I know, I'm getting all geeky and scientific, but I would really like to know.

I am ashamed to say I have no idea how many out lesbians there are in the Netherlands (where's DutchCJ when you need her?)...then again, even if we could beat Norway in numbers, I'm not sure we could beat them in hotness...damn.

A true hero!

Copy-Paste from Wikipedia

Karen Christine ("Kim") Friele is a Norwegian gay rights
activist, famous for being the first Norwegian to publicly acknowledge
and advocate for her sexuality, in June of 1965.

In Norway, Friele is credited for having influenced the abolishment of
criminalization of homosexual acts in 1972 and for declassifying
homosexuality as a psychiatric condition in 1978.

She has written several books on gay rights, her authorship starting in 1972.

Wow, having that 10 people is awsome, we are in desperate need of more. But I am modest: Could we please borrow only the three women who didn't make it on this years list? Pack'em together and send them "straight" to Austria.

It's easy for me to pick Nr. 1 on Austrias list: Ulrike Lunacek, MEP, spokesperson  for equality forlesbian, gay and transgender persons, foreign affairs and developement policy for the green party and the new Nr. 1 for the Green Party in the upcoming election for the european parlament. A short interview in English here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhFAVVb2MfM

But I can't think of ANY Nr. 2, 3 and so on.

So please, Norway, do some developement work and send us your redundant influential lesbians!

Always look on the bright side of life *pfeifpfeif*

I'm sure you all have plenty. You (they) just need to start climbing out of the closet in public. Just use the old trick: "if not for yourself, then do it for all the young, insecure, gay teens out there". You go Europe!

I tried and tried but I too could not come up with another famous Austrian lesbian apart from Lunacek... Even worse, not a single female Austrian celebrity makes my gaydar go off... (but that might just be my gaydar's fault).

We sure need help here!

I'm trying to remember who was the first lesbian I knew about.

I don't think it's ever NOT been mentioned in school, even in our religion class in  2nd grade, the books we had showed pictures of; I think it was a couple of guys, who were having a partnership ceremony. (The Norwegian Partnership Law was a fact in 1993) And as far as I can remember it was never made a big deal out of, it was just a one paragraph add on to the chapter about marriage, right at the end, like '...and some people are homosexual, meaning that they fall in love with someone of their own gender, and they have partnership ceremonies, which gives them almost the same rights as marriage does...'

And that was it. No great embellishment on how it was right or wrong, or normal or abnormal, it was just mentioned. I guess it wasn't until science and religion classes around 7th or 8th grade that they started mentioning how some of our class mates are probably gay and that that is perfectly ok as well. Of course some of the guys made comments on how gay guys made them sick, etc. But I can't remember it ever being a problem to discuss homosexuality in class. Sex however, made eeeveryone blush, since the elderly teachers were convinced we were basically ignorant on the subject, and that a thorough explanation was needed:S

Hmm still thinking about the first Norwegian lesbian I knew about. Hege Riise or Linda Medalen perhaps( former football players for Norway). Or maybe it was Mia Hundvin (though she is bi, and a hot former player for the Norwegian handball team). I guess we're talking about 1998 or 1999 here, and I would have been 11 or 12 (djeese, now I feel like a little kid). And I think we heard about Ellen being gay when she came out in the US, I think that happened around -97 or so?

Sorry for rambling on:)

Bente's picture
Submitted by Bente on February 1, 2009 - 22:30.

Hm, I don't think I can remeber "my" first lesbian either. I vaguely remember we used to talk about that this girl I played football agianst being gay. But it was never a big deal. It was more intriguing. I think that was in 95-96 or so. And then a girl on my team came out in 96 or 97. I was 15 at the time and should have known better then playing it straight for years to come!

But I do remember Ellen. She was my big hero long time before I knew I was gay. I don't remember when I watched the series on tv.

I'm so sorry but before this I had no idea at all that Norway had so many lesbians, hot ones too. At my university, there used to be many foreign exchange students from Norway and the girls were hot. If I had known about Norway back then, I would have tried to get to know them better and maybe 1 or 2 of them might have been a lesbian, haha.
