What If The Whole World Were Gay - Part I

Sandra Showtime's picture

By Sandra Showtime on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 04:41

Before Christmas Embla asked you about your scenarios concerning a gay world, to create a mini-cartoon series. Thanks to everyone who contributed! This is the first edition.

The copyright belongs to Embla, but you know...spread the word, dudes! ;) So, feel free to put it on your blogs, with a little credit to the creator. See you soon again in our very own gay-world!

(The cartoon is actually horizontal but the content field isn't long enough. To see the original cartoon click here.)

This angry teenager slang cracks me up! Great work, Embla! I love it when people can put thoughts/ideas into pictures. Can't wait to see what happens next in our very own gay world. *g

there's actually already a word for "straight-pride-parade", it's "loveparade" or "streetparade" as some call it *g

I think it's wonderful how you included so many ideas already in this first installment. Can't wait for the next to come.

But, Embla, did you forget to dress longhair? ;-)

And here I thought I was just a perv for noticing what appears to be her state of undress... *g*

Nice job, Embla!

Hey, cool idea and i love the way they're talking. :D

just one quick grammatical notice: not to sound like the big smartass, but shouldn't it be called "what if the world WERE gay"?

Thanks everyone for the lovely feedback on the cartoon. And thanks a lot for inspiring me to do it and for coming up with all the great scenarios :)

Bee Charmer: No need to feel bad about correcting grammar :) But actually (and now I may sound like a smart ass here...) I think it should be "What if the whole world WAS gay" cause "world" is singular even if the content is plural... hmmm anyone?

Kisses, EmblaCool

Yeah, you're right Embla, it should be What if the whole world was gay.

I actually didn't even notice the title was wrong, even though I titled it "correctly" on my own blog. Hmmm.

I think you are on the money here Embla, since you are referring to 'our world', you are talking of a specific place and therefore a singular entitySmile

well I think you could very well say "were"... considering this being the subjunctive (typically used in dependent clauses
to express wishes, commands, emotion, possibility, judgment, opinion,
necessity, or statements that are contrary to fact at present....)

Present indicative
Present subjunctive
Past indicative
Past subjunctive

to own
(regular verb)
I own
he/she/it owns
we/you/they own
I own
he/she/it own
we/you/they own
I owned
he/she/it owned
we/you/they owned
I owned
he/she/it owned
we/you/they owned

to be
I am
he/she/it is
we/you/they are
I be
he/she/it be
we/you/they be
I was
he/she/it was
we/you/they were
I were
he/she/it were
we/you/they were

Thank you Wikipedia   :D

PS sorry the table is so dark.. don't know why it's gone grey.. just copied and pasted from the link provided (bug alert)..

see the past subjunctive of "to be" = he/she/it were

lol.. sorry about the confusion there.. and that we posted at the same time too.. lol.

an ENG grammar vlog... ahem.. only with lot's of Yorkshire accent ahaha .. this is actually why I thought I'd better check the was/were thing.. people here say it all the time, but that really is a regional thing, not a subjunctive I'm a fraid, lol. In fact Yorkshire sounds a bit like people being thick (i.e. stupid, another nice ENG colloquialism there ;D).

Here's the proof...the vid is too funny.. must see. We Yorkshire people are the best, ROFL!!!!!!!!

Sooooo cool! I will print it and hang on my wall :) Why did you choose 3 boxes and not a whole comic with many stories?

I know I am a little late for the actual discussion...been so friggin' busy lately...

I am in for the "were" too..."was" in this contextual use is colloquial, i.e. you can say "was" just fine but grammatically seen "were" is still the corretct choice here. Isn't Beyoncé singing right now: "If I were a Boy"? ...a very typical saying is: "If I were you, ..." Like Frosch said "were" is typical when used in subjunctive phrases.

...some thoughts about the cartoon? *gg

Miss.Skeene's picture

well, to be honest...I can't really say much about 3 pictures...it doesn't even have a story yet. So I wanted to wait till I comment... But here I go anyway: I think it's definitely funny that one is wearing a skin-colored shirt...my interpretation is that she's naked...but that's just my crazy head probably... ;-)

Content-wise I think it is discrimination the other way around...so now the heteros are "the Other."   I'd like a character who doesn't polarize but equalizes...minimizes the apparent difference. But then maybe this is already under construction?!

Other than that good work, Embla!

First of all I want to thank everyone once again for great input on the cartoon and for the feedback now that it is out there :)

Secondly I just want to clarify that there was never the intention to make it into a long story.  I am sorry if I made the impression that this would become something huge. I always pictured it as short three-frames with a (hopefully) funny punchline at the end. I also considered making only one-frame like my all time favourite "Far Side" where the point is made clear with just one drawing, but voted against it since I felt it needed three frames to tell this particular little story.

The next installment might look different and not even feature the same characters, so please don't get too attached to the spandex-wearing one...  ;)

You didn't give a wrong impression of what you want to do, Embla.

Embla asked for scenarios of readers for what they think would change if the whole world were gay. And she promised to visualize these scenarios, what she did.

The scenario she's visualizing here is, when I correctly remember, the one of Miss.Skeene, who was the first sharing her thoughts about that: the discrimination would simply work the other way around.

This lead to a duscussion with lots of agreements with Andra Toian. So actually, Miss.Skeene is missing profundity in her own scenario :P Don't hit me, just saying you know. hehe

apologies for jumping here late, I think the cartoon is funny. I also like the idea of creating different scenarios.

I dont know, i guess another cliche/scenario we all may be gone through is the assumption that if you like women, you of course like ALL of them.
