Movies

Italy

A new Italian movie entitled Io sono l'amore ("I Am Love") features a lesbian character. The movie also stars Tilda Swinton. Read the review on AfterEllen to find out if it's a movie worth watching.

UK

Would you see a movie for even less lesBian content? Well, Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan share a kiss (yep, just a kiss) in the movie Never Let Me Go.

Theatre

Austria

A theatre version of the classic lesbian movie Mädchen in Uniform will premiere in Vienna on June 29. Mädchen in Uniform is basically an older, more depressing, German version of Loving Annabelle.

Radio

A new radio show about homosexuality entitled Je t'aime pareil starts on France inter tonight (June 26) at 9. Find out more here.

Events

Pride news

Germany/US

Last weekend, queer and transgender activist Judith Butler publically refused to accept her Civil Courage Award at the Pride event in Berlin, saying Gay Pride is a too commercial, white event. Regardless of the merit of her reasons to refuse, I think having yourself flown in and getting pampered by the CSD Berlin and then unannounced declare you don't accept, is kind of tacky and shows a lack of class and respect (read this article for a totally different viewpoint).

UK

Worchester will see its very first Pride event on September 18 and they are planning to make it a Pride event to remember. Find out more and go show your support on their Facebook page.

The Netherlands/Belgium

Today it's Pink Saturday in Amersfoort, which will include a number of different events both fun (a PANN party) and political (Hivos are organising a debate about homophobia in the media).

Girlesque is the latest organiser of women-only parties. Their latest events will take place tonight in Antwerp and on July 3 and July 7 in Amsterdam. Find out more here.

This week festivals in both the Netherlands and Belgium cancelled the scheduled performance of US rapper Beenie Man because of his homophobic lyrics. I think this is a great thing, but it's also a shame they didn't do so until LGBT organisations complained.

I don't think you can really blame the bookers. Their goal is to have big names to pull in the crowds, and most don't know every hip/happening/up and coming band/artist. That's impossible. And to know which band/artist incite hate is also an impossible task; one just can't listen to each and every band out there before booking. I think it's a good thing organizations keep up to date and blow the whistle if needed.

Case in point: a while ago I read about how a metal concert was stripped of their headlining band after the booker got an excellent band - one that would draw a big crowd. The thing the booker didn't know was the fact the black metal band incited hate through their song lyrics. Once that was known, the band was cancelled.

Just a heads up, I have noticed a couple of times you link to the vile right wing anti immigrant homophobic Daily Mail with out warning. Every time I click on a link like this my hit is being recorded generating income for them. Many sites warn that their links are for the mail so you can stop before you click, or you could just name the source and cut and paste the relevant passages

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up! We'll try to keep it in mind when writing future articles.

doesn't say much when the only lesbian 'news' is to be found in the likes of the daily mail, does it? i'm not sure that's the kind of visibility we're necessarily looking for.
