Dutch out ice skater Ireen Wüst has won Olympic Gold in women’s 1.500 meter speed skating yesterday, at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

This is the 23-year-old’s second Olympic title that she has won within four years. She told reporters that after winning her first title, she has had a few tough years, and that she’s happy to be back now. She finished 7th in last week’s 3.000 meter, and 8th in the 1.000 meter. She finished the 1.500 meter in 1.56,89 minutes.

One of Wüst’s first reactions to winning the race was: “Ik heb gewoon goud, Bert! Wat!?”, which can be roughly translated as: “Bert [a reporter, Ed.], I just won gold! What!?” She also said she was very happy about it and that she was trying to get a grip of what just happened – it was all still a bit unreal to her.

Her latest victory has also hopefully shifted the focus of reporters, which were previously more interested in talking about her relationship with fellow skater Sanne van Kerkhof, rather than ice skating.
