It's been a while, but Lists are Hot -eurOut's column for all those who love lists, whether it's making them or just reading them – is back.

This time my column is all about European LesBian TV couples.

Even though we might complain a lot about lesBian visibility on television, we cannot ignore the fact that over the past year we have seen quite a number of girl-girl couples on TV shows across Europe. Granted, some countries do a better job than others. In a perfect world, every European country would show an abundance of lesBian couples on television the way Spain has done (we'll just ignore the fact that they are also very good at making these storylines end). Perhaps things will improve in 2010.

Still, I did manage to make a selection of 10 lesBian couples that could be seen on your European TV screen. This list is in order, starting with number 10 and working our way down to number 1, but the selection is totally random (in other words, based on my own personal preference).

10. Sarah and Lydia on Hollyoaks (UK)

At number 10 we find a lesBian couple I never really liked much. There is so much wrong with this couple and their storyline, I do not even know where to start. I think my main problem with Sarah and Lydia on Hollyoaks is that they had absolutely no chemistry. Their whole supposed love affair seemed contrived and I could never quite get into it. If that wasn't bad enough, the writers decided to end the storyline by having them break up; Lydia then turned into a psycho stalking ex-girlfriend who ended up killing Sarah by sabotaging her parachute. Does it surprise you when I tell you Sarah isn't the only TV lesBian on this list that ended up dead?

9. Marina and Esther on Terapia d'Urgenza (Italy)

Next we go to Italy where we find Marina and Esther on hospital drama Terapia d'Urgenza. As you may recall, Terapia d'Urgenza is like the Italian version of the Spanish show Hospital Central (more about that one later). Or as I usually think of it, the watered down more boring version. No offense to anyone who's really into this show and the storyline, but whereas the relationship between the two women in Spain has evolved and shows a lesbian relationship in all its forms, on Terapia d'Urgenza they seem to be stuck in tired and old relationship and coming out problems. When the ladies finally got to share a kiss on screen last year, it was a huge deal in Italy.

8. Eva and Monkie on Van Jonge Leu en Oale Groond (the Netherlands)

that's how you realize that either spain is flooded with soaps or mid-aged housewives enjoy seeing lesbians on screen. i can't believe that my MILF fantasies could come true.

i'm just kidding. :)

well, my mother-in-law is not on my MILF list (erase that image, please) but she is more than middle-aged and has come to accept her daughter marrying a woman in large part due to her weekly appointment (you can't call her during those hours) with Hospital Central and its lesbian characters.

Thanks for the list, Natazzz. Actually, EU screen lesbians don't have such a bad balance this year, if we forget about the whole characters dying, actresses leaving shows and shows being canceled.

I have got to go check out Kelly and Garance on La Vie est a Nous, just that tiny short clip has me all interested. Maca and Esther / Emily and Noami are my favourite on this list. It was Maca and Esther that introduced me to the world of European lesbians. Pepa and Silvia, till now I still cannot bring myself to watch the season ending. Just the descriptions of it has got my stomach turning. They were an amazing couple and it seems almost like a personal attack to have them suffer that way...

how are they called? Darlet or Arlani??? Whatever I am not speaking Catalán but this couple is so cute and hot it makes me want to go to Barcelona (what I always wanted anyways) and learn this language, now!!

And well, the storyline is better than in your description Natazzz. At least you're a little wrong with the 'set backs' you described. It is not an ex-boyfriend of Arlet who dies. I think the one you mean is Marc and he was together with Arlets friend Paula. And second Dani gets very drunk at dinner at Joana's. That's  probably why she loses the ring there with which she wanted to propose to Arlet. But the next day when she got the ring back she looses her job and she proposes to Arlet believing that would make everything better. But Arlet wants her to do it right and doesn't answer yet.

Actually they have a very good storyline written here I think. Like the part with Arlets mother kinda encourages her to bet something in life and kiss Dani. And also the part with her boyfriend Victor  is handled very well.

I hope the second season is coming soon!!!!

So, after Skin's Emily and Naomi the Infidels make my number 2. Third has to be Carla and Stella as well .... I'll miss Carla and all the soapy ups and downs as crappy and worse written it sometimes was, Claudia Hiersche was so fantastic.
