Whether star trek or star wars is better is an argument that has raged since Mr. Lucas and Mr. Spielberg made Star Wars. And believe it or not it's a hotly debated one amongst us geeks. Do you know the general question when people are discussing Beatles or the Rolling Stones? Most people are either one or the other and ultimately that's the divide. In geek circles the question becomes Star Trek or Star wars? You might like the both but you'll always like one more than the other. Sounds silly doesn't it. After all they're just both fiction and to the casual observer they look a lot alike. The names, it's in space, strange worlds, aliens who look very human despite all the prosthetics and makeup, good vs evil, outlandish plots and spaceships.
But the point is Star Trek is just better then Star Wars and here is why:
I can open this debate and close it with one statement but I'll leave the best till last. Trust me; you want to stick around till the end for this one.
Star Wars is basically cowboys in space, over-the-top heroes, women in distress, it’s fantasy.
Star Trek is about earth exploration into space, seeing new things, exploring aspects of our humanity, discovering new world and civilization. It's science-fiction.
Star Wars is Good vs. Evil. Star Trek questions the very nature of what is good and what is evil.
Star wars whole basic philosophy is the Force. Little particles that connect us all and tie us together, that can be used by both the good and the evil side. The Star Trek started off with the concept of a united earth. Can you tell the series started in the 1960's? Its philosophy is a little bit more complicated but basically comes down to the possibility of what we might become. An earth where there is no war, no poverty, no money, where we are attempting to transcend above the basic pettiness and greed in our human nature.
The baddies:
Star Wars has Darth Vader. Little Anakin Skywalker gone bad (but the later redeems himself) and the Death Star and uhm well that's it. The Death Star versus The BORG! Who have ships that are giant cubes that come in their thousands and take over entire worlds in the blink of an eye. None of this blowing up planets. No assimilate and expand your armies. Resistance is futile!
Darth Vader vs The Borg Queen. Need I continue? Silly helmet vs ultra lean worked out female physique. Darth Vader sounds as if he's smoking continuously under that thing and the Borg Queen sounds seductive.
Ewoks vs Tribbles : they both have the furry creatures. The Ewoks make me homicidal. Really I hate them. Whereas the Tribbles annoying but very cute.
6 movies vs 11 movies and 5 TV series. The original show, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyage and Enterprise. Star Wars has 6 movies of which the last two seriously sucked. Star trek has 11 movies of which also about three seriously sucked. And the last Star Trek series, Enterprise well let’s not talk about that one. But still we'll forgive them that one. The last Star Trek movie was absolutely friggin' awesome, once I got over the shock of it.
But now for my final and closing argument. The women.

Jeri Ryan is so, well Seven of Nine that she gets double billing.

I'm with you - Star Trek all the way....
Agree.Agree.Agree..
I have never understood how can anyone compare the two shows at all? The difference is so huge. Star Wars is a little bit childish (my opinion). Star Trek, on the other hand is what a Scifi should be about. Actually, this show is THE scifi show. I'm aware, that there're several other shows out there with similar plots and style, but let's not forget that the original S.T. show was a pioneer in this field. /Not to mention, that it was a huge thing at that time, to let a black woman on a show, to be an officer, as one of the major characters/
We could probably make a hundred-page book, while trying to list all the things why S.T. is good, or better than any other scifi show, but I guess the main point is simple: It asks questions and explores its characters' lives and decisions, like not other show. It is really Science Fiction and not just fiction or fantasy like most scifi shows are.

No, I don't think so. It is not the quantity, is it quality that matters and so ... Star Wars is the winner. For me! It has the better story, the epic, the SOUNDTRACK (I Love John Williams) and the feeling. It has the force! I personaly find Star Trek boring and uncreativ. But it is okay, when other people don't think so. It is a very subjective topic and I think it is a boring discussion.
And the real Star Wars fan read it, there are so many books from the Expandet Universe ... love it.
And I don't see any Science Fiction Lady who can come any close to the one and only Princess Leia aka Carrie Fisher.
Even in Sci-Fi series I prefer Babylon 5. With Commander Ivanova (Yeah!).
Happiness isn´t getting what you want, it´s wanting what you´ve got.
Star Trek! Was there very any debate?!
It's a no brainer.
Somewhere in all my junk I have the blueprints for the Enterprise. Maybe we could all get together and build Enterprise eurOut?
Totally agree. And funny how I read your post just as I was starting to rewatch my Star Trek DVDs!
It has it´s, very own alternate Universe where the series will be continued. It has CLONE WARS the animated series. Next up is a real life series.
Besides Natalie Portman and carrie Fisher are hotter than the Enterprise-pseudo-science-posse!
