The European Parliament took no pity on their French colleagues and held the first session after the election on France’s National Day, i.e. yesterday. They started with the election of the Parliament’s President followed by the election of the 14 Vice-Presidents. The committees will be formed on Thursday, and then we’ll also know who of the Vice-Presidents we will need to look at under the microscope.

 

Lithuania

The most negative news comes from Lithuania, where the Parliament adopted the law which prohibits discussions on homophobia a second time. This time the President has no right of veto, he has to sign the bill within three days. Amnesty International sees this law as a “huge step backwards”.

...I know I am generalizing and stereotyping, but you don't seem to have that much going for you these days, well, besides maybe great cheap hard liquor, but that really isn't much.

Slovenia vs. Lithuania

Fine, so the news from Slovenia were a pleasant surprise on an otherwise depressing LGBT news morning. The civil union law is outrageous, but I'm glad to see the EU still does protest things like that (though I won't believe any promises of betterment until I see them implemented).

I wonder what the EU will have to say to Lithuania? The new law brushes up against so many guidelines, not to mention plain common sense, that I barely know where to begin (I did already rant about it today, but I am still just as mad).

Thanks for making it through the bulk for us, Maxime. It can't have been a thankful task today.
