Following up our article Halftime at Wimbledon, we now take a look at the women who made it into the next round.

It was hot yesterday at and in Wimbledon, everybody complained about the heat and some players really suffered. Just like Nadia Petrova who had to seek for medical attention several times and still lost to Victoria Azarenka in the one of the two women’s matches that needed three sets.

Desperate was Ana Ivanovic who had to declare defeat in her match against Venus Williams due to an injury.

Who is the woman commenting for Canal+? During the match Razzano vs. Schiavone she said something similar to “I can’t bear this anymore, I will stop watching”. Razzano lost the match quite clearly.

Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska and Elena Dementiewa all breezed through their matches.

The match Wozniecki/Lisicki also has an obvious result with 6:4-6:4 but it’s the unseeded Lisicki who ousted Wozniecki.

Lisicki now faces Safina who defeated Mauresmo in a strange match, the other three set match. I admit I’m largely biased, but if Mauresmo had just kept up her genius moments that sometimes came through, she would have won. Let’s just say Safina doesn’t play the ball, she beats and fights it. She shouldn’t be too confident about winning, cause after all Lisicki ousted Kuznetsova – to whom Safina lost the finale in Paris – and Lisicki already defeated Venus Williams this year.

I have to say Safina really annoyed me with her moaning yesterday. Other than tennis I can inform you that the WC in beachvolleyball is taking place in Stavanger Norway. And I know you all can enjoy a round of beachvolley...

now there is an image, Bente! ;-)

am still bummed about Mauresmo getting ousted, but at least she showed she's still got it. At least momentarily.

Safina... meh. Double meh since she kicked of Lisicki, whom I was beginning to like.

Ah well, there is always the next tournament. And beach volleyball.

Watching Amélie Mauresmo over the years I always thought 'it is a pity that this woman is not using her will to talk herself into some kind of delirious confidence' like some other sports did. Like Serena Williams does, for example: she is 'hyping' herself into confidence. Or J.-W. Tsonga (mens tour) is 'acting' himself into confidence; and Muhammed Ali 'the best talker of all times' He talked his opponents down (next to also being brilliant with his body - right!) . And it is funny that all the examples that come to my mind are black!
Amélie does not seem to connect her great will and hunger to win grand slams to her confidence like some others manage to do. She always seems so complex. And her confidence seems to depend on a million things. She seems to be too relaxed as a human character to push herself into a kind of 'over-confidence' - into more confidence as the day is suggesting actually. Some players do that. And they win - often surprisingly.

After all, I thought the monday-match against Safina was terrific! We won't see a player taking the power out of Safinas massive shots that easily and safely for a long time! And it was a typical Mauresmo match: put her on center court against some high profile player and she will play perfectly beautiful - no matter what day it is. In the end her opponent had a better focus on winning this thing.

I am looking forward to the wednesday match Safina vs. V. Williams a lot! My guess is it will be a long and powerful match to watch! And I hope that Safina will win the tournament. I find her will to work herself out of very bad and unpromising situations quite impressive. Her Berlin final last year was overwhelming! I hope she will beat both Williams sisters – the other one of them, Serena, I refuse to watch since she started to strategically use her screaming to irritate her opponents in critical situations. That is my 'vocal' impression of her.

Enjoy the matches! And if anyone is addicted to beauty and intelligence - after Amélies drop-out… you might be looking out for some of the mens matches!
