For years Mathilde Santing and Frédérique Spigt ruled the Dutch gay scene. Mathilde, who’s the creator of (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful songs ever made, has always been open about her attraction to women. For years she wouldn’t make a statement saying she was either a lesbian or bisexual, but eventually she decided now was the time. Having had lasting relationships with both men and women, Mathilde fights to get rid of the nasty stereotypes still associated with the bisexual label.

I have to admit that I have never seen Mirella van Markus’ TV show(s). I’m always up too early (and not in the mood for television) during the week and Goedemorgen Nederland (Good morning Holland) doesn’t air during the weekend. In fact, the first time I heard of Mirella (and her sexuality) was while researching this article. During this research I came upon a lot of information (and pretty pictures) including this interview (which I have fallen in love with mostly because I relate).

I have discovered that Mirella has had a relatively easy life and an early discovery of her sexuality. She’s been one of the most prominent lesbian women in the Netherlands (she will have done Goedemorgen Nederland for three years before ending her run this year) and she’s passionate about what she does. She’s also gorgeous and intelligent, so whatever she decides to do next, Goedemorgen Nederland has come to an end, I should start to watch.

That’s it! This is my list of 10 Dutch out women you need to know. I, in no way, pretend to have listed every out Dutch woman, but I found these pretty important and fitting the rules I’d stated for myself.
