The Lesbian News Snatch - June 24th

June is supposed to be our month, filled with parades and full of pride. Why did my research for this column leave me depressed? Some of the news even had our American friends wondering what’s going on in Europe.

tweet

Lithuania’s Parliament passed the homophobic law which will prohibit any propaganda for homosexuality near/in schools and where minors might have access to it. (hat tip to bradamante for confirming).

Poland is following the bad example of Lithuania, a member of the parliament already asked Lithuania for a translation of the text. He goes even further to make some homophobic comments.

First the British Ambassador in Poland is criticized by Poland for being gay-friendly and then the British Ambassador in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian theologians have planned a protest march for June 27th, the same day for a Pride March is planned. They’ve got nothing against homosexuals, but against the abnormal being brought to spotlight.

Let’s take a step back and remember: these are all members of the European Union.

...I think this round up of depressing news needed just that.

Now I'm going to go back to being embarrassed some more...

It is extremely depressing and I am afraid that in any minute now Hungary will take the wrong turn as well since the extreme right was very very successful in the last EU elections...

wow, that was depressing indeed - especially the fact that all these things happen in the EU.

On Lithuania, and possible Poland, I'm at a lack for words, though my new favorite source of aggravation might by Austria, both by excluding the LGBT community in lawmaking AGAIN, and above all for all those homophobic, ancient-stereotype stained diatribes on female homosexuality and sports (I don't have the knowledge and the contacts to write that article, but I am most passionately pissed off...).

Also, I've never heard of Aruba before.

Apropos Germany: I found this Merkel talk to be a lot tamer than the one she did right after the Pope/Pius stunt; in this one, it seems as if she is trying to nudge the catholic base to open up a little... sadly, that will never be reflected in the party program.
Even more sad: that the SPD has lost so much percentage lately that their inclusive program may not have any actual effort.

Argh! To let off steam, I shall go out in my lesbian vampire dress and turn some innocent straight Bulgarian soccer players GAY in all my theologically backed up abnormality. Until someone stakes me with a stereotype, that is.

how depressing is this TLNS? Sigh. Especially the news from the Eastern EU(!) countries. What about the anti-homophobia regulations in the EU as part of the joining the club pack????
What on earth are "our" politicians doing in the EU parliament to let all this happen?

And the UK conservatives?? WTF? Any more right-wing possible before they are called right-wing and no longer conservative..gee!

And that sociologist from Germany?? You would think that somebody having studied the field ought to have more brains than spweing homophobia..after all sociology is concerned with gender ans sexuality too. Jesus Christ.. did this guy buy his diploma.. or win it in a lottery?? Or did he study in the bible belt? Academics in such influential positions, and then also being given the opportunity to broadcast their opinions through publicity is very concerning! I do not even want to think about going any step backwards after all the hard work we had to do and the fights we fought.
For christ's sake, it's the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots this year.. have we learned nothing????????

I'm really really concerned..what does the future for LGBT people hold if the EU allows for such divide, having "Western" countries being all open and progressive (well, in comparison, of course not all is well, I don't need to tell you that) and "Eastern" members being on a differnt par. It's a disgrace!

I'm off to watch some more of this now... to remind me of some people still being sane!!!!!

why do you have to make it so hard to be patriotic? You could be so beautiful and charming, yet you prefer to give us the cold shoulder. We're in the 21st century now - I know that you cling to old glory and antiquated habits but times have changed and the world moved on without you. Sure you can close your eyes and pretend that everything is well but do you really think you can forever ignore 20 years of progress in human rights? Do you really want to remain stuck in the past? Do you really want to become part of the 'third world'? Or worse, do you really want to repeat old mistakes?

*sigh*

Boy, can we be proud to have such an able sociologist teaching at the university of Vienna...

(But then we also had Freud with his rather peculiar idea of penis-envy, thus such weird ideas are not completely out of line.)

If you feel masochistic today (and speak german) be sure not to miss the comments to the article in the first link in the Austria section -> I'm not sure if it's a bunch of brain amputees or trolls discussing there...

Hugs from negative-news-guaranteeing Austria!

Oh, over the desperation I nearly forgot: Thumbs up for the police officer from Berlin! :-)
