Lists are hot: European ladies from AfterEllen’s Hot 100 list

This Monday AfterEllen came out with their annual Hot 100 list. It’s the third time they asked readers to nominate their favourite hotties, and boy did they. They received over 150,000 (!) votes from lesbians and bisexual women everywhere (and probably a few straight women and men too). With such a huge response you can’t really argue the results, but of course plenty of women did judging by the comments.

If there is one list that is hot it is of course a list consisting of the hottest ladies as voted for by queer women. I love lists and hot women almost equally, so it was an easy choice when I wondered what topic to choose for this month’s Lists are hot column.

What I would like to do is discuss with you all the European ladies that made the list this year. I found 16 in total (do correct me if I am wrong, looking through all that hotness did cloud my brain a little), mainly consisting of British women, three Spanish ladies and one woman from Norway (I bet you can guess who that is).

But before I focus on all that is hot and European, I want to share with you my personal Top 5 of women who made it to this year’s Hot 100 list. These are actually women I voted for myself. None of them are European, but hey, hotness is universal and I just couldn’t deny you guys these photos:

My Top five women in the order of appearance on the Hot 100 list:

#04. Leisha Hailey

#06. Rachel Maddow

#14. Eliza Dushku

#22. Rose Rollins

We do love our own, don't we? Play gay(ish) and we are forever in your corner. We are loyal beings. thanks for this list! I forgot some were from here and really... why are half of these near jail-bait age?!

I'm still liking this years Hot 100. Better than last year. ^_^

Women are so hot!

:p I like this list, especially since you gave us some background on those of the european women who didn't make it to the text part on afterellen.
And i completely agree, there is something really weird about thinking teenagers are hot, it feels wrong, even if they're only five years younger than me...

as for the women; lena headey is just so ... i don't even know how to describe her properly, but i guess I'll have to go with sexy. I watched St. Trinians 4 times in a row, just to see her telling her student that "smart is sexy" with that amazingly hot intensity, all wrapped up in teacher gear, glasses and her hair in a bun...

And as we all know, Hammerseng is hot. But I feel a little weird thinking about her hotness because she's always a real person when we see her on tv. the actresses are different, they always play a character I can love or hate, and I rarely see them as themselves.

Eliza Dushku... Faith can come throw me down on anything, anytime, I'm not going to complain. put up a little fight maybe, just for show, but I know she can kick my ass...

Rachel Shelley. I voted for her. Adorable. Sexy. Beautiful. And so much more... (yes, I'm starting to run out of words here. Have i used hot yet?)

Keira knightley. I usually love her characters (except in love actually), and I think she's beautiful, but she doesn't really do it for me.
Same with kate winslet. (although i did have a major crush on her back in the days of the titanic...)

Laura sanchez. Definitely hot. and cute. But I'm so hung up on that redhead she's kissing that i barely notice her. unless they're in the same room together of course, that chemistry is sending happy sparks straight to all sorts of parts of my anatomy ;)

The rest of this list is for me a mix of "who's that? and "oh, that girl from... from... where was it? oh yeah... didn't make a lasting impression."

and judging by the lenght of this comment, i guess it's a very good thing that I don't have more to add. for now.

I just signed up to say that I don't understand why Shelly Conn is classified as European. Isn't she Indian or something.?Wasn't she in some British indian gay movie as well as Mistresses? I don't find her particularly hot. As a European I don't think that she deserves to be classifed as European. It's the same mistake that Afterellen did in classifying those 3 European Spanish women as "women of colour." Whatever that is. I think someone at Euroout should write about the mistake AE made and ask them to send a letter of apology to us for trying to identify us as something we are not. European Spanish women are NOT WOMEN OF COLOUR and i am offended that Laura Sanchez, Penelope and Patricia were classified like that. They're hot white women and that's obvious to anyone with good eyesight. They do not have a colour other than white.

I think AE should apologise for including them as women of colour and not changing it despite the numerous complaints they have received from Caucasian Spanish women. I think it's American arrogance that everything in the world should be seen from an American point of view that's stopping them.

Saying that Shelly Conn is European is like saying that there are Caucasians who are part of the native population of Asia.

Now I'm sorry, but I cannot fathom you said that Shelley Conn does not deserve to be classified as European.

You said, and I quote: "I don't find her particularly hot. As a European I don't think that she deserves to be classifed as European."

She was born in London and has spent her entire life here, and regardless of her ethnic origins, is European. If the entire purpose of Eurout was to cover people with an ethnic European background, they could cover most of the same material as is presented on Afterellen, as most white people in the US, descend from Europeans. Would you find that to be a little odd? Would you like Afterellen to only cover Native American lesbian and bisexual women in the media?

I also discovered, after checking her on Wikipedia, that she is dating a white english man. Would you classify their children as European?

Who you find hot is your own personal opinion. Trying to deny people with an Asian ethnic heritage from being perceived as European is discriminatory.

Shelley Conn was born in London and has lived there for most of her life. She has the British nationality and is therefore British.

I think her ethnicity is part British and part Sri Lankan, but to be honest, I am not sure.

However, the point is that nationality and ethnicity are two separate things. I see nothing wrong with calling a British citizen British.

An overview of hot European women is hardly a place to have serious discussion about etnicity, but you are happy to discuss issues of ethnicity and nationality in the forum.

Natazz: "However, the point is that nationality and ethnicity are two separate things. I see nothing wrong with calling a British citizen British."

I disagree. If you argue in such a way you are saying she is not ethnically European but has a British passport, which justifies her being on the list of Europeans.

Generally, in Europe ethnicity and nationality are not separate things. Nationality is very racialized in Europe, therefore we find it hard to think that someone might look Indian and be British, or someone looks Turkish and is German, or someone is black and Swedish at the same time.

Just to prove my point, have you ever asked or wondered where someone who doesnt look white really is from, or where their parents are from, even though that person says they are from a European country?

...about the questions you just brought up, sometimes. One reason more to point out specifically that the place where you were born and raised is indeed your home-country and you are a fully recognozed citizen in it, wherever your family was from many, many years ago.

To not recognize an Indian-looking British person as European because of "indian looking" is racism for me.

The people we are talking about are, per definition, European because born and even raised in Europe.

Natazzz proved the justification for AE's and our decision to of course treat those celebrities as Europeans, with making the thought experiment and divide nationality and ethnicity in the head for a second. She did this not to claim that these two factors are separated in general but to show that even if people stick with their opinion that someone Idian looking shouldn't be considered as European, this person still is European by nationality.

How someone looks can lead to very wrong assumptions. I myelf don't look German at all. There were no other nationalities involved in the history of my family but still some people say that I look Turkish, especially in summer when I am all sunburned ;)

Shelley Conn is born and grew up in Britain, she has a British passport. We have all rights to be proud to identify her as a European woman who made it into the Hot 100 list.

Shelley Conn is and remains European.

... but I find ClaudiaR's statements just plain rude.

Nationality does not equal ethnicity - as children (whether or not several generations down) from emigrants can attest to.

It's human to want to label other people, and it's natural that in a predominantly "white" environment, other white folks won't question your heritage. Until a foreign custom gives you away, or an accent. Or unless your skin color doesn't match theirs.

Having said that I know there are countries (like Brazil and Suriname) where people, upon greeting, ask where you - or your parents - hail from originally. Regardless of the color of your skin.

ClaudiaR also states that: "Saying that Shelly Conn is European is like saying that there are Caucasians who are part of the native population of Asia."
I would like to point out there is a difference between a NATIVE population and the general population.
absent already pointed out that "most white people in the US descend from Europeans", which is true. But, apart from the Natives, nobody in the US originally hails from the US.
The Natives are the only ones making up for the native population, whereas everybody else makes up for the general population. In that regard: yes, there are plenty of Caucasians out there who are part of the general population in Asia.
