The first time I came across the name Frida Kahlo was back then when Madonna was planning to make a movie about her life. Madonna wasn’t the only one interested in this project, the name Judy Davis also came up several times. Probably you all know that it was Salma Hayek who brought life into this project and made quite a successful movie, called Frida” out of it.

frida the movie

Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 in Mexico, later she insisted being born in 1910 to match her birth to the start of the Mexican revolution. She didn’t have an easy life, was diagnosed with polio at the age of 6, leaving her with a crippled leg; was terribly injured in a bus accident at the age of 18 and it would be easier to make a list of the bones that weren’t broken.

I'm very intrigued by the Broken Column painting. I'm not that into art, but I love that one and would hang it in my house, if I had the money to purchase it.

Thanks for alerting me to the exhibition, Maxime (I'm all for eurout covering LGBT-related art events, too!), I'll definitely try to catch it.

Frida Kahlo is amazing. I encourage everyone to go. And since it is supposed to be a permanent exhibit, when I finally get my arse moved to Europe I too will go check it out. :)

I'll make sure to check how long permament means, when I go there ;)

From a touristic point of view, Baden-Baden is a beautiful smallish city, which also offers many cultural events and it's only 30 mins from Strassbourg - another must see place.

It was still in school when I first heard of her. In the art class we discussed what we thought this painting http://www.artquotes.net/masters/frida-kahlo/self-portrait-cropped.jpg was supposed to be about. Almost everyone agreed, that it is about feminism. But it wasn't. It was about love. After her divorce to Diego Rivera, she tried to hurt her former husband, who loved her with long hair. Like attempted suicide, this was a deed done in despair, concealing a cry for help, attention and love. She was focussed on herself.

Frida Kahlo once said: "The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration."

And this is the reason why she is so unique for me. No (deliberate) political message, ‘just’ painting life, her life. Her paintings are intense, powerful, breathtaking and full of emotions! She was an amazing woman.

Thanks maxime for reminding me of her! Even if I dont think, I can manage to go to Baden-Baden.
